National Engineers Week, the annual celebration of everything engineering, might not be until next February, but you can start preparing now. The new logo for E-week 2011 has been released, and you can visit the E-week website for ideas about how to get involved. And continue watching the site as more information and resources are added.
Dec. 2nd marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the EPA. A special area of the EPA website has been set up at http://www.epa.gov/40th/ to help celebrate this milestone. Visitors to the site can watch videos and browse photos covering events and achievements taking place over the 40-year period.
After working for the past five years on developing an address standard for the U.S., the Federal Geographic Data Committee is closing in on finalizing their work. By the end of this year, they expect to release the United States Thoroughfare, Landmark, and Postal Address Data Standard. For those interested in a preview, a draft of the standard can be downloaded in a zip file on the FGDC website at this URL:
The CDC recently released statistics for 2008 related to fluoridation of community drinking water supplies. You can find the report at this URL: http://www.cdc.gov/fluoridation/statistics/2008stats.htm
While fluoridation of drinking water can be a controversial subject, many community water supplies add this chemical to prevent tooth decay. The data reports that 62.4% of the U.S. population receives fluoridated water.
Interested in publishing your government data online? The UK has released a CKAN module to be used on Drupal-based Websites (Drupal is used to publish the Public Works Group site). This module allows sites to publish data in a manner similar to the UK's CKAN site. Each year Ready.gov offers information and resources for local agencies to pass onto their residents and businesses. This year their site offers a widget that agencies can place on their own sites.
