Get Ready! Engineers Week is on the Horizon!
It's that time of year again when engineers everywhere reach out to the public to promote our profession. This year, there seems to be several more organizations supporting e-week through their own websites and promotional efforts. You can still go to the official site at http://www.eweek.org and pick up some information, ideas, and graphics. But in addition, this year you can find even more resources at the following sites:

Traffic Signal Community & Resources
The National Transportation Operations Coalition (NTOC) has set up a website offering "a public meeting place that provides members and the public with resource documents, discussion forums, member profiles, file storage and more to share traffic signal management and operations, safety, and maintenance information."
People interested in traffic signals can create a profile on the site and connect with other professionals. As of Oct. 5, 2011, there were 167 members on the site. There's also newsfeeds and event feeds related to the industry so visiting the site is a great way to get the latest scoop on signal technology.
Check Out the Military's Social Media Guidance Docs!
The U.S. military has been proactive and on the front line in leveraging social media and other online technologies. In August 2011, the Army released version two of their United States Army Social Media Handbook (you can read the book in the embedded frame below or follow the link to download it from Slideshare.net). And more recently, the Marines published an online handbook of social media principles: The Social Corps. Each publication provides a great model for other agencies working on providing guidance for their own employees. So far, on Slideshare, the Army's document has received almost 93,000 views and 4,700 downloads.
Register Now for the National Preparedness Month Toolkit
Sign up now to be a coalition member on the National Preparedness Website. After registering, you'll receive a link to access a toolkit with resources to use to "encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and communities." These resources include web banners, posters, press releases, presentations, templates, quizzes, and many other items.
AWWA annual conference goes virtual
(DENVER, CO) – On Monday, June 13, 2011, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) will launch its first ever virtual event. ACE11 Virtual will broadcast AWWA’s Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE11) content live from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
ACE11 Virtual attendees will have access to over nine hours of live broadcast, beginning with the Opening General Session keynote speakers Mr. Yoshihiko Misono, Executive Director of the Japan Water Works Association (JWWA), and Dave Singleton, President of Layne Christensen’s Water Resource Division.
In addition to the live content, ACE11 Virtual will also contain over 15 hours of on-demand content from AWWA’s extensive library of videos and webcasts.

Bike to Work Month
The League of American Bicyclists are promoting May as Bike to Work Month with this week designated as "Bike to Work Week." For those of you wanting to encourage more bicyclists in your community, the League offers many promotional materials on their website at: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bikemonth.
While you're in "bike mode," you might want to check out a website for a new community developing in South Carolina. They plan to create the entire community with no provisions for vehicle traffic. Cars will be parked outside the boundaries of the city. Find out more about Bicycle City at: http://www.bicyclecity.com/
The Great Shake Out
The Earthquake Country Alliance has created The Great Shake Out - a website offering a great number of resources and information related to earthquake preparedness. The site highlights several ShakeOut events to be held throughout the world over the next year in an effort to better prepare citizens for earthquakes.
There are also links to a QuakeQuiz and Beat the Quake test. The Central U.S. section of the site has a whole page of resources including audio, video, brochures, posters, and web banners. Below is a sample banner that can be used to promote the ShakeOut effort.

Help Promote World Water Day - March 22nd

The organizers of World Water Day have created an amazing collection of materials for anyone to use to promote this event and help educate people about water. They have posters, t-shirts, brochures, an advocacy guide, videos, backgrounds for desktops and mobile devices, logos, website buttons and banners, media briefs with facts and figures, and exhibition graphics. Many of these materials are in multiple languages. There is also a page where you can check for events scheduled to be held in your area.
