Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of presenting at the annual APWA conference. My portion of the presentation covered Web 2.0 tools, and how we can use these in our jobs. I was joined by Jay Socol and James Matney from Texas Engineering Extension and by Kim Smith and John Jainschigg with World2Worlds. For those who attended or anyone else interested in downloading the Powerpoint presentation, you can find it on the Slideshare Web site by clicking the link below: |

Public Works Networking Site |

MySpace, Facebook, and LinkedIn have been used for some time now to help connect people from around the world. A quote found on a forum provides a broad generalization of how these sites are used: "Facebook and Myspace are for socializing; LinkedIn is for business leads". However, as popular as these sites may be, they are not focused on one particular area of interest, and people not interested in friending the whole world may hesitate to get too involved. For those who still want to take advantage of online networking opportunities, but want to do so with a more focused and targeted approach, there are emerging social networks that concentrate in one particular area of interest. And now the Public Works Group has taken advantage of these offerings and created a network for the Public Works Group for anyone who has an interest in connecting with others in the industry, but who may not want to join Facebook or other similar sites. Anyone working or selling in the industry can sign up by going to the network for the Public Works Group and filling out the registration form. Membership will provide you with a connection to others in the industry, and the interface allows a member to upload photos, videos, create a blog, or create a group within the site that explores a particular topic in the industry. Everyone working in public works has information and experiences that can benefit the industry, and the Public Works Group networking site provides the online setting in which this can take place. |
